Questioni have a 13 ft magnolia grandiflora with pure green leaves(under and top). I planted it from pot to ground about 3 weeks ago. It is turning yellow and dropping some leaves. I am wondering if it is transplant shock or chlorosis. I water once a week and use western states vitamin b-1. I also used vigoro tree and evergreen food. when i planted it i used 1/2 master nursery bumper crop all natural organic soil builder and 1/2 original soil. I live in victorville ca. i think it's zone 9 or 10 in the usda zones. It gets cold in winter sometimes snowing and hot in summer above 100 degrees at times. its windy also during all seasons. please help. thank you.
AnswerI think you are over caring for the tree. Do not fertilize any more for a year. Most folks do not recommend fertilizing for the first year. Too much fertilizer will burn the root system. Water only once a week with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. Too much water is as bad as too little. If you have not done so mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the stem. This will hold moisture around the tree and reduce the need to water as much.
