QuestionMy cherry willow has buds but it has not bloomed yet ? A lot of the other trees have bloomed. we had a warm spell for about 2 weeks then we got really cold with a snow.I didn't cover thinking it would be ok its it possible that its dead or possible in shock
AnswerYou can check to see if it is still alive by starting near the end of a branch and scrape a small bit of bark off and if the color under the bark is green the branch is still alive and should leaf out. If the color is brow then the branch is dead at this point on the branch--continue down the branch scraping at intervals until you find green or reach the trunk. When you find green stop and you can prune the dead part off or I would prefer to wait until the tree leafs out and then you can prune the parts that do not leaf out. The weather can stall the leafing out for a few weeks.
