QuestionThe roots on our Globe Willow Trees have grown out of the ground and they are alos uprooting our sidewalks. Can the roots of these trees be cut back? Can they be shaved down?
AnswerThey can be cut off but not shaved down. You can cut up to 25 % of a trees roots without severely damaging the tree but if you shave the roots or fungi will enter and cause die back of the foliage or death. For exposed roots it is better to cover them with not more than 2 inches deep of sand. This will make a smooth lawn surface for the grass to grow over the roots. You can trench along the drive and cut the roots that are under the drive and stop them from spreading under and lifting the drive. Make the trench at least 2 feet deep to get the roots.
