QuestionI live in NE Florida and have a large Live Oak tree (approx. 40" dia.) within 3' of my concrete driveway. Over the years, its roots have cracked the driveway, posing a significant tripping hazard. I have already saw-cut a 10' x 12' area around the damaged portion of the concrete in preparation to remove the concrete and pour new.
My question is, can I cut out portions of the tree roots (estimated to be within 8-10' from the trunk) without killing or damaging the tree? I don't plan to completely sever the root(s), but only notch / remove portions as necessary. Also, is there a "paint" that I could use to help prevent disease / further root damage, once cut?
The Live Oak is too beautiful to remove, yet I have had more than one visitor trip over the broken concrete. Thankfully, no one has fallen or been injured!
Your expert advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
AnswerCutting a few roots will not effect the health of the tree. It would take cutting abut 25% of the roots to cause any major health problems. IF the root is over 5 inches in diameter I would apply a pruning paint to the cut end but small root will not need to be painted. Make the cuts as straight and clean as you can this will allow the wounds to heal faster.
