Iford Weeping Cherry Tree

Question
My friend has just purchased a weeping cherry tree and someone said we should plant it in a large pot and bury the pot in the ground because the tree will produce runners. Is this true or would it be better off straight in the ground? It is going in the bed in the centre of the lawn. Thanks

Answer
No if you plant it in a pot the roots will be confined and as the tree grows it will die since the roots will not be able to supply the needs of the trees foliage. The pot will also hold water and rot the roots. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball/pot and fill the hole with good top soil or potting soil. Plant so that the top of the rootball is at ground level with the planting area. You do not want it to be too deep or too shallow.  Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. This will help hold moisture around the roots.
