QuestionHi Jim, I would like to know if there is any type of tree that won't attract insects, specially spiders. There are many different types of trees in the backyard planted by previous owners and spiders keep going inside the house. I woke up the other day with a spider in my face. Cant sleep anymore, I am terrified.
AnswerThe trees in the yard are not a problem unless the limbs are touching the house--then this may give the spiders a pathway to the house. Normally the spiders living in the house are a different species than the ones living on trees. Both are looking for food usually small insects. The main key for spider prevention in homes is insect control.

Spiders don't like the smell of lemon. Using a lemon scented spray next in places where spiders usually enter the house may reduce the risk of them coming in. Spray a lemon cleaner on window seals, door thresholds, etc. in order to keep spiders out.
When you find a spider web or nest, clean it out. Get rid of spiders by wiping out their safe places.
Keep other bugs to a minimum in your home in order to get rid of spiders. Spiders feed on other bugs, so try and make sure there aren't many other pests in your homes so that there isn't a smorgasbord of food options for spiders in your house.
If you has a wood burning fireplace, check the wood that you bring into the house carefully for spiders in order to avoid inviting these pests in unintentionally. Prune any shrub that is hitting the house back from the house.
Try a bug bomb to get rid of spiders. Make sure to follow directions closely and get kids, pets, people out of the house before you use the pest control. Home Depot or Lowes is a great place to look for bug bombs that will get rid of spiders. Call a pest exterminator to rid your house of spiders--this may and usually will take a couple of sprays since the sprays will not kill the eggs and more may hatch out. Ask for a guarantee to rid the spiders in the home.
