Question
QUESTION: We live in the Rio Grande Valley and want to plant a live oak.  Is there a type of live oak that does not have acorns?

ANSWER: No I know of no oak tree that does not produce acorns. The acorns are the reproductive part of the tree. It is possible to spray the oak each year with a plant growth regulator to
prevent acorn formation An ethephon spray during flowering is recommended to
prevent acorn formation but correct timing of the spray is critical.

A garden center may sell ethephon under a trade name such as Florel. Ethephon
breaks down to release the plant hormone ethylene. A homeowner may find it
most efficient to hire a certified arborist to spray their trees because an expensive
sprayer is required for tall trees. Your local shade tree commission may have
some experience in this area. Here is a web link to the organization that certifies arborist.

QUESTION: Thank you for your answer and suggestion of how to eliminate the acorns. We were going to plant the live oak because it is drought resistant and we live in a very warm area and don't get a lot of rainfall.  We are looking for something that grows relatively fast, is drought resistant and will provide shade.  We have a rock yard and would prefer a tree that doesn't shed lots of leaves or have acorns or something that will drop in the rocks.  Any suggestions?

Answer
I would suggest that you visit the local tree nursery and tell them your situation as to the site and shade needs and ask them what they would recommend for your location. All the hardwood trees will shed leaves in the Fall so you may need to look at an evergreen or conifer tree.
