My red maple tree was planted 2 years ago in a zone very close to a Hwy. Now, it has bark decay which is extending to the base and the leaves are turning yellow with red veins as if were autumn (we are in the middle of summer!). I fertilized it with 12-12-12 and put cedar mulch on the base. What else can I do? I'm attaching a photo
Thx
Answer Looks like borer damage. I would spray the areas with an insecticide called Merit. This will kill nay insect in the wound and prevent others from attacking. You are doing what i would recommend in the fertilizer and mulch. I would use a fertilizer rate of 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. I would fertilize it again next spring since you have already applied fertilizer. Any loose bark can be cut from the wound this will help the wound heal faster.
