QuestionI have planted two Nutter Oaks in February 2009. They are about 15 Ft. tall. One tree has sap (i think) oozing out of the trunk about 8 inches from the ground in several spots around the trunk. Don't see any bugs. What should I do?
AnswerSounds like it is an insect called a borer. These insects will bore into the tree and sap will flow from the wounds. Spray the areas on the trunk with an insecticide called Merit. This will kill the insect under the bark and the wound will heal and the sap will stop over time. Check with your local nursery for this product.
Borers attack trees under stress so I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter scattered around the tree and watered in good. Fertilize just before a rain storm and you will not have to water.
