My weeping cherry tree is in trouble

Question
Hi. I recently purchased a Snow Fountain weeping cherry tree from Lowe's.  It is approximately six feet tall. I live in West Virginia and this spring we have experienced an unusually large amount of rainfall.  The tree is planted in predominantly clay soil, with potting soil and mulch around the top of the root ball. My wife and I noticed last week that the leaves on the tree are beginning to curl up and become brown--there is no yellowing--just a rusty, crisp brown color around the edges.  Our yard is flat--is the tree getting enough water or too little--or is there a bigger problem?  Thanks so much for any advice.  Charles

Answer
Sounds like just shock from the planting. The top of the root ball should be even with the ground level and not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch placed around the tree. Too much water will cause the leaves to wilt the same as too little. About all that can be done is wait. IF it does not rain I would water once a week with 1 inch of water--place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop.
