QuestionI have a fairly mature Magnolia tree about 3 1/2 feet from the side of my garage. My A/C unit and electrical box are located very nearby up against the house with lines running down the side of the garage into the ground. My concern is if the root system can cause damage to the cinder block foundation or to any of the power lines that are running underground nearby. Would you have the tree removed?
AnswerI do not think you will have a problem with this tree from the roots. Since it is a "fairly mature tree" you would have seen signs of damage by now. The roots will not harm the electric lines at all. # 1/2 feet is mighty close but since it has grown there for a long time it should be ok.
