QuestionMy 10 year old red maple is developing fine roots above ground. We have a dirt collar about 6 inches high and the roots are above it. Should I raise the dirt level or just trim off these roots. Is the collar adding to the problem.
AnswerI am assuming that by a "dirt collar" you are referring to the tree planted on a mound. The tree roots are within the first 12-24 inches of soil and sometimes do grow on the surface. The problem with adding soil to the weight of the soil can press the air spaces and damage the roots. The amount is the key. You can add a couple of inches of sand over the roots and this will not damage the roots. More than 4 inches will damage the roots. Cutting the roots will cause die back of the foliage and is not a good idea. Use sand instead of clay type soil and you should not have a problem. The mound is not adding to the problem.
