QuestionI have a two year Hawthorne tree and would like to know if I can prune it? It has a few little buds at the bottom of the trunk close to the ground. Do I just cut them off and leave the tree alone, or should I just leave the buds there? We live in Missouri and wasn't sure if it was to late to prune. Thanks!
AnswerYou can prune the sprouts from the lower trunk anytime during the year. It will not harm the tree in fact it will help in allowing more water and food to go to the foliage instead of these sprouts. This small a tree I would not prune any of the limbs off it will need these to grow a good root system. The sprouts are of no use to the tree and should be removed.
