QuestionWill roundup sprayed around the bottom of a small tree kill it? I just planted a small live oak(about 5 ft tall). There was a lot of weeds and grass growing around the base, so I sprayed around the base with roundup. I've always been told that if it doesn't get on the leaves, it won't hurt it. I didn't get any on the leaves, but I think I killed it. I've been told that this is not possible. Is it??
AnswerNo unless there was a cut into the bark where the Roundup could get to the cambium layer. Roundup is used around trees and can be sprayed on the trunk. It is used to kill vines on the tree trunks. I can not see how the Roundup killed the tree. The newly planted tree could have had a root exposed that had been cut or broken off exposing the cambium to the Roundup.
The sprayer that was used did not have any residue from other herbicides in it?
