QuestionWe had a beautiful tree that was killed by boring insects, but since there were several small trees coming from the original tree's roots, I dug one up and replanted it. I was happy that it seemed to take to its new location and thrilled when I saw that it was going to bloom this year. I was disappointed when the blooms came out white instead of purple. What's up with this? We live north of Los Angeles in the Santa Clarita Valley. Should I dig it up and buy one that is blooming purple to be sure of what I've got?
AnswerSome cultivars of flowering trees are grafted on the root stock of other trees of the same species. The purple robe is only grafted onto a rootstock of black locust. The sprouts are coming from the root system stock and the root maybe be from a white variety and the purple was grafted on to the white. So the sprout will be the same color as the root stock.
To get the purple you may have to buy another one from the nursery.
