QuestionI was wondering if you could tell me how deep a Yoshino Cherry trees root system develops. I need a flowering, disease resistant tree near my septic system. The drain tiles are 52" deep. If a Cherry Tree isn't the answer, then what kind of tree do you recommend? I live in Northern Virginia and have clay soil.
AnswerYou should not have a problem with cherry. The vast majority of their roots are within the first 2-3 feet of soil depending on the soil type (clay soils would be closer to the 2 foot range). All trees can be a problem with septic lines if they are planted over the lines and the lines are within the first three feet of soil. With yours being 52 inches deep I see no problem.
