QuestionOur big maple tree had big branches cut last Fall. Now, it is leaking alot of sap. Any suggestions?
Thank-you!
AnswerThis is normal for maples. The increase pressure in the spring that draws the sap from the roots to the leaves will leak out where there are limbs pruned. This usually only happens the first year after the pruning. Not a problem except it could attract borer type insect that will enter the trunk. I would spray the wounds with an insecticide called Merit. This will prevent the borers from attacking. Your local nursery should have the Merit.
