Hemlock Trees as Firewood

Question
Are Hemlock Trees good for Firewood? I cannot find them listed on any of the charts. What is thier growth time frame? We have a great many in our forest and they are overshadowning a great many other trees, including the few deciduous trees that we have. Thank You

Answer
You can burn the wood from most trees for firewood. Hemlock gives off relative low heat, throws off many sparks when burned, is generally rated for firewood as fair, has good aroma when burned relative low heat produced 15.9 Thousand BTUs per cord of wood (oak which is one of the prime woods has 30 MM BTU's per cord). It is similar to pine.  Overall it is a fair wood for firewood.
They will have an  Annual Growth Rate: 12 to 18 inches.
Of course this will depend on the site they are planted in--good soils will mean a faster rate.
