QuestionI have a young tree that has a split branch as a result of heavy winds. I do not want to prune it, but I would rather try to save it. The base of the branch is solid and I did use twine to compress the two broken halves together. What, if anything else can I do to save this branch?
AnswerYou can try it but it is a slight chance that it will work. Some species do well while other fail. Try putting it back together and wrapping with twine and seal the wound with grafting wax. Check with your local nursery for grafting wax. The wax will keep in moisture and fungi out. I think I would put the grafting wax on the area and wrap a product called Tree Wrap around the area and then tie it. You may have to brace it with wooden strips to keep it from bending. It may take several years for this to heal. It is up to you--prune the branch off or try to bend it.
