QuestionA Beaver got to our beautiful 4' tall 6' wide Japanese maple all the way around and up some, can I save it somehow?
AnswerIf it cut all the way around the trunk the part above the cut more than likely will die. The living cells of a tree are under the bark and if they are girdles the tree part above the girdle will die. I would wait and see what happens this spring and see what part of the tree leafs out. Maples will sprout back from the stump. If the top is killed and there are sprouts coming from the lower stump you can let them be the new tree. These will grow fast since they have a good well developed roots system. About all you can do is wait and see.
