QuestionHi, our cherry blossom tree has been accidentally cut right down to stumps (ie. main stump and about 5 main branch stumps. It looks healthy although I have cleared away a lot of ivy that was strangling the base. Will it regrown and how quickly is that likely to happen? Many thanks for your help.
AnswerIt should go sprouts from the stump like most hardwood trees. By mid may you should have sprouts. If the original tree was grafted the sprouts will be from the root stock and may not look like the cherry that you had (blossom color being the main difference. Some ornamental cherries will be grafted onto more hardier rootstock to produce a new variety. With the established root system the sprouts should grow fast and a couple of feet tall the first growing season.
What you should get is many sprouts from the stump. I would let them all grow and wit until late summer and pick the tallest and largest sprouts to be the new tree trunk and prune the others off. You can either pick one or a couple your choice.
