QuestionWe have a triple birch,15 yrs. old, next to the driveway. It has caused cracking and shifting. We plan to repair the driveway by tearing out the concrete and installing permeable pavers. The people doing the work said the tree should come down but my research seems to say it might be able to stay. What needs to be done to preserve both the tree and the driveway
AnswerYou did not say how close the tree is too the driveway. Root barriers can be installed along the drive and between the drive and the tree to keep the roots from going under the drive. Up to about 25% of a trees root system can cut cut without seriously damaging the trees health. You will need to cut the roots along the drive down to about 18 inches depending on the width of the barrier. This is a trench wide enough to install the barrier. These barriers are made of different product most are a rubber or plastic substance. There are several types all will work. Here is a web link to a site that has several barriers you can look at. IF the tree is close to the drive and cutting along the drive will cut more than 25=30% of the roots I would go ahead and move the tree-if its that close the limbs will over time extend over the drive and hit the cars.
