QuestionHow do I get rid of a mulberry tree? It's about 8" in diameter at the base and I've removed 3/4th of the branches. Should I continue to hack away? I am allergic to its pollen, and the leaf buds are just starting to form.
AnswerYou can either cut it down and paint the fresh stump with a herbicide called Roundup OR make cuts in the trunk into the wood all the way around the trunk about 6 inches above the ground and squirt Roundup into the cuts. The Roundup will be taken up by the tree and translocated to the roots killing the tree. If you use the cuts in the trunk method (hack and squirt) you will still need to cut the tree after it dies. Beware that Roundup will kill any green plant it gets on so make sure you do not get it on any plant not wanting to be killed. IF there is any sprouts from the stump you can spray the Roundup on them as they appear. Use Roundup right form the container.
