maple tree leaking clear liquid

Question
We have a 20+year old "healthy" maple tree (actually multi-branched sucker from original tree that died 20 years ago) that is leaking clear liquid that looks and feels like water from woodpecker holes. A large quantity of liquid has leaked out. The rows of holes that are leaking extend approximately 15 feet up the tree. Higher up holes are not leaking. Could tree trunk be full of water (no damage to tree other than woodpecker holes)?

Answer
The bark of maple tree is very thin and the woodpecker (sap sucker) makes the holes into the cambium layer which is the living layer of cells and they will seep waater. These cells are filled with liquid and when damaged they will seep. The birds are making the holes to attract insects and then they return to eat the insects. I would spray a common insecticide on the area with the holes and this would discourage the insects and the bird will stop coming. The wopund will heal by themselves without doing anything after the woodpecker stops.
