Sand Cherry

Question
Hi Jim,

I'm new at this tree/bush planting and have a question regarding our Sandy Cherry bushes. we live on the plains of Colorado but are on a plateau. Almost 7.000 feet up. We planted our sandy cherries about 4 years ago and both are doing great! My question is: we are getting saplings along our walkway and I was wondering if I could maybe cut the root and plant it somewhere else? this would be a tremendous help, for I would love to do this this spring if at all possible. Thank you for your help!

Kent

Answer
Yes. There are generally two types--those growing from seed and those sprouting from the root system of the parent tree. The ones from seed will have a root system independent of the parent tree and can just be dug up and moved where you want them. the ones attached to the parent root system can be moved if when you dig them you also dig enough root system to keep the seedling alive. the early spring is the best time to do this.
