Live oak borer

Question
I planted 150 2" Live Oaks in 98 which are now 15" to 22" trees in Lee Co., Ga. One of my trees has several 1/8" holes about 3' up which are weeping profusely. Is this a borer and if so what will be the affect? What about my other as yet unaffected trees? What needs to be done? Thanks.

Answer
Since there are several holes I would think it is sap sucker damage. This is a woodpecker that makes holes in the bark and when insects come to feed on the sap the bird returns to eat the insects. I would spray the trunk with an insecticide called Merit this will kill the insects and prevent them from coming back and the bird will go away since they have nothing to eat. Merit will also kill pr prevent  any borer type insect that maybe attracted to the wounds. The wounds will heal by themselves.

Sap sucker do not really damage the tree except for the sap flow. IF you want to make sure this is what it is you might call the local office of the Ga. Forestry Commission and ask one of their Foresters to take a look. This is a free service.
