QuestionI have an easement next to my home managed by the SF - PUC(Public Utilities
Commission) - or I should say......not managed by them. I took upon my self
to plant 5 Italian Cypress trees as anchors to the corners/architecture of my
home, they have the proper hieght/scale etc, to beautify this space. They've
told me they are fine with me planting but don't want any trees as the root
structures are with in 15 feet of utility lines. I have seen Cypress trees pulled
out and they seem to have a fairly compact ball like structure, that they're not
invasive root structures. Can you confirm and is there anywhere I could get a
specification/PDF file that shows this to attempt a negotiation with the SF -
PUC - I love these trees and I can't imagine anything else with the majesty of
them for where they're located.
AnswerThe roots will not be a problem unless there is a broken water or sewer pipe and then the root of any plant can and will enter the pipes. As far as underground wires there is no problem unless they will need to be replaced. They do have rather tight root systems --most trees roots will extend about 1 1/2 times the width of the branches and since these trees are slender the roots do not extend out far. This is one tree that I would say will not give any problems.
I would ask what type of concerns with the root they might have and if it is roots in pipes I would tell them you will guarantee the roots will not enter any pipes that is not leaking. Might try getting a local Certified Arborist involved. here is a web link to the agency that certifies Arborist and a list in your area.
