Any time from when the leaves fall off the hardwood trees until the leaves bud back out in the Spring. This period of the year is better since the tree will not use as much water as during the summer months. When you plant the tree dig the hole twice the size of the rootball and as deep and fill with good top soil. Mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inches of organic mulch not piled up on the tree trunk. This will help hold moisture around the tree roots. Remove the burlap and the wire from the rootball before you plant the tree in the hole.
