QuestionHow do we stop a sassafrass tree stump from sending out shoots all over our lawn. The tree was cut down about 2 years ago.
AnswerYou will need to treat the foliage of the sprouts with a herbicide that will kill the roots system. One of these is a product called Roundup. Roundup is sprayed or wiped on the foliage and the sprouts will transport the herbicide to the roots killing the system. Roundup will kill any green plant it gets on so you will need to be careful not to spray the Roundup on any plant not wanting to be killed. One way to do this is wet a rag with Roundup and wipe the foliage of the sprouts with the Roundup. I would wear plastic gloves when you do this so the smell of the Roundup does not get on your hands. Roundup will not harm humans but the smell may linger of absorbed into the hands. Roundup can be found at any nursery/ garden type store.
