QuestionMy mom bought a crypt myrtle tree in Arkansas and brought it to Michigan. She put it in a pot and has moved it in and out of the house for the last tree years, but the tree does not bloom. It stands about 4ft tall and has grown as tall as it can in this pot. We know the tree will freeze if we leave it outside this winter, so we were wondering if we should just move it into the house and leave it inside year round? And will it bloom if it stay inside where the tempature stays around 70degree in the winter and 75 degree in the summer.
AnswerThe problem is the number of hours of sunlight over the year. And it does need the change of temperature the outside seasons would bring. Plants need varying amounts of sun to set flowers. Crept myrtle will grow in zone 5-6 which is the southern part of Michigan. See web link for your location. http://www.growit.com/bin/USDAZoneMaps.exe?MyState=MI
This tree is too large for the inside. I would wait until after the last frost in the spring and plant the tree outside in a sunny place. Dig the hole twice the size of the pot and as deep and fill with good top soil and mulch around the tree (about 2 feet around the trunk) with not more than 3 inches deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk.
