is this bad and if, so, what can i do? do i need to have the tree removed? it is
about 25 feet from our townhouse in northern md. also there are alot of holes in
the ground about 1/2" diameter and brown shell like bodies of some bug??
AnswerThe trunk growth is called a burl carsed by a bacteria and will not harm the tree. The holes in the ground are from an insect called a cicada and the skins are where the cicada turned from a larvae to an adult. You more than likely hear the cicadas singing a dusk in the trees. They make a make a load buzzing sound. Some folks call them hot bugs. They lay their eggs in the twigs of trees but cause little damage.
