I was told I have bore worms and that my tree needed to be treated. I've also
noted black ants around the tree.  Can this tree be saved?  What should I do to
save it?  Thank you for your time.

To kill the borers spray the trunk with an insecticide called Merit. This will kill the borers in the trunk. Borers attack trees under stress so I would recommend that you fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of 1 lb of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter watered in good. Fertilize now and again in the Fall.
