Curly Willow Planting

Question
I purchased a pot with two curly willow trees about a foot tall from a Master Gardener sale and need advice on planting.  I live in zone 8, south Louisiana. The tips of the trees have started to die back, I suspect from lack of water. Do I need to plant these in shade or sun and in a moist area or dry area.

Thank you,

Answer
While willows prefer moisture, they are tough and adaptable. The only soil that does not suit them is alkaline soil. They like full sun or partial shade. Do not plant near the house or driveway or near a septic line or tank. the roots will clog the lines.
When you plant them dig the hole for the tree about twice the size of the pot and as deep. Fill with top soil and mulch around the tree with not more than 3 inch deep of organic mulch not piled up on the trunk. Water with 1 inch of water every other day for the first month or so and then every week unless it rains. Place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop.
Until you plant it water the pot so that the soil stays damp not wet.
