QuestionWe had two large Poplar Trees cut down to a stump in our yard, our tree cutter told us to drill holes in the stump and put in copper sulfate. Well it seems that the copper sulfate did nothing, as now we have hundreds to thousands of tree sprigs over the yard sprouting from every surface root. Will the roundup dill those or do you suggest something else?
AnswerThe Roundup will kill them BUT Roundup will kill any green plant and if you get the spray on the grass it will be killed also. If these sprouts are in the lawn mowing weekly will over time kill them off. The roots will run out of energy (food) and will stop sprouting foliage. You can wipe the Roundup solution on the leaves of the sprouts making sure it does not drip on the other plants. This will be taken up by the foliage and transported to the roots killing them.
Depending on how long ago the tree was cut you could also try drilling holes in the stump and pouring Roundup in and see if the stump will transport the herbicide to the roots. If the stump is still alive this should work.
