pomegranate

Question
we bought a pomegranate shrub/tree last week.  we planted it in primarily clay soil; some of the leaves have been turning yellow, though the tips appear to still be growing new leaves and new shoots.  we live in central california, and last week, it was over 100 degrees (110 on one day).  i've also been drowning the pomegranate with water daily...  how can we tell if we've been overwatering the plant or underwatering it?

Answer
Over watering can be as bad for the tree as too little water. Newly planted trees need 1 inch of water about every third day. Place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop. If you have not done so mulch around the tree with organic mulch not more than 3 inches deep and not piled up on the trunk. Water when it does not rain. Go this method through this growing season and then water once a week. I assume  the tree was planted properly and the burlap and wire were taken off before it was planted.
