QuestionMy Korean dogwood, planted last year, is growing wildly 6 or 8 odd branches at
the top about a foot higher than the rest of the tree--same thing on the sides.
Also many little branches are popping out very near the ground. Should I be
trimming or just letting it do what it wants?
AnswerI would let it grow as is for another year before pruning it. A newly planted tree will first grow roots and the grow a flush of branches to produce food for root growth. The tree will grow and one branch will become the main trunk. When one in taller than the other some of the lower branches can be pruned off. But it is best to wait and see what shape the tree will take. A tree grown in a open spot will have a more fuller crown than one grown in a tight spot. Sounds like the tree is growing good I would leave it be.
