QuestionI am growing Eastern Red Cedars and Rocky Mountain Junipers in pots to plant out in Southern California. This is not an optimal combination, but they've been doing very well in their 2 gallon cans (they started as seedlings).
Are they likely to do well also when planted out? The area (Solvang, over the mountains from Santa Barbara) gets some frost but not heavy freezing. It gets in the high 90's sometimes in summer.
Answer I do not think you will have a problem with the red cedar but the higher temperature may give the juniper problems. They grow naturally in area with lower summer temperature. But if the containers are out side and they are doing well I would think they will be ok. make sure you dig the hole about at least the size of the containers--twice the size would be best. mulch with not more than 3 inch deep of organic mulch (not piled up on the trunk) and water when it does not rain. They do not need much water--the method you are using in the pots seems to be working good.
