AnswerAbout all that can be done is cut the loose bark off and let the tree heal itself. Wound dressing will slow the healing process. Water the tree if there is a period of dry weather. Repellents for the dog are an option in some circumstances but are not effective in deterring bark-stripping. Capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot sauce, is a registered repellent. I think I would try putting hot sauce on the bark--it will not hurt the tree and should repel the dog.
