QuestionI have a Shamel ash that we have grown from a tiny one gallon plant. It is now four years old. I guess it was getting watered really well because it was growing like crazy and we just kept pruning it back. Well, I did not realize until someone told me, that it was supposed to be a single leader kind of tree. But we pruned it so funny that it has two main branches coming off the trunk in a v shape. I am tempted to cut one off, but then it will be lopsided. What should I do? Will it ever fill in? It only grows up and I was hoping it would grow out some or start a third branch or something. I honestly don't have a clue about tree maintenance and I am afraid I butchered this beautiful tree.
AnswerI am not sure what you were expecting but this is a fairly large tree at maturity. Height: 40 to 80 Feet Canopy Width: 15 to 60 Feet. It does not need pruning at a young age. Sounds like you are over maintaining the tree. I would just leave it a lone and let it grow. It may keep the forked appearance which is ok but over time I would think being this young that one of the limbs will become dominate and become the main stem. Sounds like it is growing good let it do its thing.
