QuestionI bought a red oak last fall. I didn't think to wrap the thin trunk and the squirrels have damaged it, scraping off the bark with their teeth. I'm wondering if there is something I can do to help it heal. I was going to wrap it (I thought better late than never) but also thought there might be a product I could apply to help it heal.
AnswerNow that spring has arrived the squirrels should not bother the tree--they look for a food supply in the winter and the fertilized tree was available. As long as the bark is not stripped off all the way around the trunk the tree should recover. There is not really anything that can be put on the tree to speed the healing. If there is loose bark around the wound this can be cut off. I would fertilize the tree with 10-10-10 fertilizer at the rate of about a cup of fertilizer now and again in late summer. make sure the tree has water if it does not rain--water with 1 inch of water (place a pan under the tree and turn the sprinkler on and when the pan has 1 inch of water in it stop.
