QuestionI am a Forester and an Arborist. I recently had a fellow Arborist ask me about red bark on a pine tree, he didn't know what kind it was but I am assuming a loblolly since we are in GA. His assumption was that there was some mineral (iron) leaching through the bark since it was none of the common pine ailments. I can't recall hearing about this before do you have any ideas?
AnswerYou got me on this one. I have not seen this in my 37 years in Forestry. My first thought was Fusiform Rust but this is more orange than red and on galls on the stem or limbs which I am sure y'all have seen.
You might check with the Ga. Forestry Commission Forest Health foresters and they might be able to either help or steer you in the right direction. The contact their is James Johnson, you can let him know I sent you I was his counterpart in Alabama before I retired a couple of years ago.
