Questioni was given a weeping cherry tree, late last summer, all the leaves were brown but it was not dead ,we planted it,but now it looks dead and i don't know if i should prune back the branches or if there is anything i can do to save it, please HELP
AnswerFirst check and see if the tree is still alive. Start near the end of a branch and scrape a small bit of bark off if the color under the bark is green the branch is alive at this point on the branch. If the color is nor green( brown) the branch is dead at this point on the branch. If brown continue down the branch scraping at intervals unto you find green. Try this on other branches. When you find green prune the dead part off and the tree should leaf out. Or you can just wait until it leafs out and prune the dead off. With the description you gave I can not tell what killed the tree but would guess the shock of being planted in the Summer did most of the damage. Trees planted in the early spring of fall have a much much better chance of surviving than those planted in the summer due to the lack of moisture and the summer heat.
Sorry!
