QuestionSaratoga Springs, NY here! Bordering the back of my house, approximately 25 ft due west, there is a row of red pines that were an apparent hedge row between farm crops at one time. This is now a housing development and they straddle the border between me and a neighbor. The trees are approximately 50 feet tall with all their growth in the upper 15 feet. Most recently, a winter windstorm brought two of them down, snapping them at about 10 feet above the ground. Same thing happenned with one of them last winter. Fortunately they all missed the house, coming down alongside between I and my southern neighbor. Is this likely to occur again and again with each wind storm? I live in fear that the next time it will be through my roof! Regrettably these trees are on my neighbors property or they would be gone by now! My neighbors are take no responsibility for what has or might happen in the future! Nor du our homeowners insurance companies since only yard damage has occurred, not structural damage.
I would note that two of these trees have recently just died off for no apparent reason. There remain 11 more trees to go!
Thank you for your response.
AnswerMy first response would be yes the tree will continue to fall with the wind. Sounds like they were planted for a wind or sight break and now they are too large. They should be replaced with a smaller tree. I would suggest you contact the NY Department of Environmental Conservation, Forestry Division and ask one of their Foresters to come out and advise what to do (this is a free service in most states) You can look in the local phone book for their number or email the Forest Health Section at
[email protected] and they should be able to point you in the right direction for local help.
