QuestionI have a manitoba maple in my back yard and it has grown too big (shades my whole back yard) and it also spits black stuff all over my deck. I would really like to cut it back about 15 feet. When is a good time to do that?
AnswerManitoba maple is the worst bleeder of any tree around here, and it needs to be pruned in the heat of summer, July and August, when the water supply is too sparse to facilitate bleeding. Pruning at any other time may cause months of bleeding which exhausts the tree.
