QuestionCan the roots of the Bradford Pear generate the same smell as the blossoms times 100. Late last summer a high wind toppled over a 20 year old Bradford in our front yard. A stump remains along with an extensive root system that is above and below ground within centimeters of our house. A couple of weeks ago, we noticed the horrendous salmon, burnt dust, fishy odor in our home. The smell was so horrible we couldn't stay in that part of the house. Nothing fazed the smell. Finally, after about 9 days, the smell went away, although I do still faintly notice it in the front room nearest the roots.
AnswerI do not think the smell is from the Bradford roots. There are folks that use the wood of Bradford to make wooden items and they say the wood does not smell. The part of Bradford that smells is the flowers and fruit. Must be something else. I know in my old house we had a mouse die in the wall and this smell lingered until the body decomposed. Some insects like centipedes will give of an odor but these are usually a problem where there is moisture like a basement. Sorry that is about the best I can think of.
