QuestionWe have a beautiful Bradford pear tree in our front yard. Due to a current ice storm we have lost part of this tree. I am truly devastated because it was our only since of privacy in our subdivision. A large limb on the southwest side of the tree snapped. It also took a portion of the trunk, the split stops about 3 or 4 inches from the ground. I am wondering if there is any possible way of saving this tree or if it is a complete loss. Thanks for all your help.
AnswerYou can save the tree but it may always have a not full crown with the missing side. Cut the fallen branch off and trim any loose bark or wood from the wound. No need to put anything on the wound, These type of sealers will slow the healing process. Bradfords have limb angles that are prone to break during storms. As the tree matures the limbs become heavy and the tree will start breaking apart that is why the Bradford is classified as a short lived tree. Formally this tree was recommended to plant in yards but now it is rarely recommended due to the breakage problems. sorry!
