QuestionI have a 2 year old green maple. What do you look for when pruning? Is there a particular form the tree should have? We live in Alabama.
AnswerI would not recommend that a tree this small be pruned. Pruning is done to allow one to walk under a tree or to remove limbs that are crossing and rubbing on each other or limbs that are dead. The time to prune maples is after the leaf drop and before they leaf out in the spring (maples ooze sap during the growing season if pruned then). If the tree is in a spot that it is free to grow I would let it grow. I see little need to prune a two year old tree.
The form is like a mound (Round headed) with the height and spread about the same measurements.
