QuestionI am looking to transplant grand fir trees that have spent more time than intended in the nursery they are now 3 to 4 feet tall and planted less than a foot apart. Should I thin them and root prune?
AnswerI would not prune or root prune the trees but try to retain as much soil on the root ball as you can when you dig the trees. Then dig the new hole twice the size of the root ball and mulch around the new planting and water. I would do this transplanting in the early spring after the ground is not frozen if you live in an area of cold. If the ground does not freeze where you are then transplant from Jan 15 - March 1.
