QuestionI live at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri.
We have a tree the people around here call "Juniper-Cedar". This Tree has blue juniper berries, but when it is cut down the center of the trunk is cedar.
My brother lives in Colorado, and says there is no such tree called "Juniper-Cedar".
If this is true, what is the name of the above described tree?
AnswerCommon names can be a problem in identifying a tree. Trees have different names depending on what local call them. Sounds like what you are describing is Eastern Redcedar, Juniperus virginiana. Other common names for this tree are red cedar, red juniper, pencil cedar. There is another tree in Missouri called Chinese Juniper, Juniperus chinensis. But I would think you have Eastern redcedar. There are other "cedars" these are from the species Cedrus and Thuja. And since the common name there is Juniper-cedar I would go with Eastern Redcedar, Juniperus virginiana.
Here is a web link to information from the Missouri Forestry state agency on redcedar. http://mdc.mo.gov/forest/urban/urbantre/1con.html#anchor646670
