QuestionOur douglas fir appears to have started a new main branch that is growing straight up along the main tree itself.
LET ME BE MORE SPECIFIC ON THIS QUESTION I PREVIOUSLY SUBMITTED: THE EXTRA BRANCH IS ATTACHED TO THE MAIN TRUNK ABOUT 2 FEET FROM THE BASE OF THE TREE. THE TREE IS 7-8 FEET TALL RIGHT NOW.
(Should we cut this branch off as it does appear there are few candle shoots coming from the main tree itself? Of course this is in the front center of the side facing the yard. If we are to cut it, when is the best time? Will it not cause any damage to the tree itself if we leave it?)
AnswerYou can go ahead and cut it off or you can leave it. If it is left you may have a forked tree when it gets older and this may lead to one of the branches breaking off leaving only half a tree. If it is cut now the tree will fill out over time in to a one stem tree which is preferred.
